Example of packaged food product

This tool help you to decide which information is required to demonstrate with simulation whether specific migration limits (SML) are not exceeded.

In particular, it calculates with decreasing conservative assumptions the requried maximum concentration in the packaging material (CP0) to demonsrate the compliance.

As a result, you can ask your provider, whether he uses or not the requested substance with a concentration above the calculated one. Higher the expected value of CP0 is, more accurate must be the physico-chemical description of the desoption of food-packaged substances.

mg/kg
In absence of information, choose [always] the substance- expected to be present - with the lowest SML value. (use search SML if needed)
mass of food
relative unit
A relative mass is accepted when the same normalization is also applied to the packaging material.
mass of packaging material

as mass of food
This process must be reiterated for all pieces of the packaging material in contact with food (body, top, bottom). A safe value overestimates the real one.
packaging thickness
Must be appropiately overestimated to account for a possible consumption before the sale-by-date.
product shelf life
days
Must be appropiately overestimated to account for a possible consumption after the sale-by-date.

HOW TO AUDIT YOUR PROVIDER
Pressing the buttom "check the compliance" launches several simulations with a large set of assumptions, which will be used in the next step to "guess" in real time the maximum initial concentration in the packaging material (CP0), which demonstrates the compliance of your packaging. According to your knowledge and the provider information, you can increase interactively the maximum CP0 value.
After preliminary checks by your own, prepare you to contact your provider to obtain the information you need to demonstrate the compliance. As a rule of thumb, deny any provider, who does accept a minimum of transparency or who does not accept alternatively experimental verifications.
